All existing and newly appointed company directors need to apply for a Director Identification Number (DIN) through the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS). Existing directors will have until 30 November 2022 to obtain their unique DIN, before penalties apply.
Who needs a DIN?
- Any company trading under the Corporations Act.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations registered under
- the CATSI Act.
- Corporate Trustees: including Family Trusts and Self-Managed
- Super Fund directors.
- Charities registered under the ACNC and Not for Profit entities
- trading under the Corporations and CATSI Act.
- Foreign companies trading in Australia with an ASIC registration.
Next Steps
1. Set up your MyGov ID login, ensuring you achieve standard or strong identity strength, and download the relevant phone application.
If you are unable to do this, you can complete your application through a slower phone application or paper form which will be available in November 2021 but you must still complete step
2. Prepare your documentation as evidence of your personal ID. This documentation must be verifiable by the ATO and will include the following:
- Tax file number (TFN),
- Residential address as held by the ATO, and
Any two of the following personal information documents:
- Bank account statement
- ATO notice of assessment
- Superannuation statement
- Dividend statement
- Centrelink payment summary
- PAYG payment summary.
If your legal entity has an Australian Business Number (ABN), you will be required to confirm whether that organisation is registered as a company with ASIC (with an appropriate Australian Company Number)
3. Once your DIN has been generated, please give your unique code to your accountant for their records.
Anyone who is a director or wants to be appointed as a director needs a DIN.
